Ang tao’y nakikilala sa gawa
At hindi sa salita.
A man is known by his actions and not by his words.
Pag labis ang suyo’t galang
May masamang tinatakpan.
If one shows too much affection and respect, he is covering up something evil.
Kung magbibigay ma’t mahirap sa loob,
Ang pinakakain ay di mabubusog.
Alms given grudgingly will not satisfy the hunger of the recipient.
Kung magagawa rin lang ng paupo,
Ay huwag na sanang gawin pa nang patayo.
What can be settled amicably should not be settled violently. (Literal: What can be done sitting down should not be done standing.)
Ang taong nagagalit
Walang kilalang matuwid.
An angry man knows no reason.
Wala sa balat ang tamis ng duhat.
The sweetness of the blackberry is not seen in its appearance.
Madali pang gisingin
Ang natutulog nang mahimbing,
Sa nagtutulogtulogan na gigisingin.
It is easier to awaken one who is fast asleep than one who is only pretending to sleep.
Magbiro ka sa lasing
Huwag lamang sa bagong gising.
Rather tease a drunkard, than one who has just awakened.
