  • Nang tumigil sa pag-aaral sa kolehiyo sa edad 21 ay nagsimula bilang actor sa pelikula noong 1950. Nakagawa siya ng higit sa 120 pelikula.
  • Ginawaran ng Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) para sa Paglilingkurang Pambayan, Philippine Jaycees noong 1972.
  • Naluklok sa Hall of Fame ng Famas matapos makamit ang pinakamataas na karangalan bilang Pinakamahusay na Aktor at Prodyuser ng Pinakamahusay na Pelikula noong 1981 at 1984.
  • Naging Alkalde ng bayan ng San Juan, Metro Manila sa loob ng 17 na taon (1969-1986).
  • Nanalo bilang Senador sa pambansang halalan noong 1987.

  • Inaresto noong Abril 25, 2001 habang nilitis ang kanyang mga kaso.
  • Nasa ilalim ng House Arrest sa kanyang bahay sa Tanay, Rizal habang patuloy na dinidinig ang kanyang kasong pandarambong.
  • Noong Oktubre 25, 2007, pagkatapos ng halos pitong taong pagkaka-piit, siya ay binigyan ni Presidente Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ng executive clemency na nagpapalaya at nagpapanumbalik sa kanya ng karapatang sibil at politikal.

  • On October 25, 2007, after almost 7 years of detention, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted him executive clemency that finally released him and restored his civil and political rights.
