Important military leaders of the Katipunan had their own flags. Bonifacio's flag had a sun with 16 rays shining over three white Ks against a red background. His flag was hand-sewn by "Katipuneras".

On August 19, 1896, the Katipunan was discovered by the Spanish colonial authorities. The Katipuneros sprang into action. On August 23, 1896, Bonifacio's banner was unfurled during the Cry of Pugadlawin in Kalookan. On this day Filipinos openly defied Spanish rule by tearing up their cedulas, or residence certificates. A week later, Bonifacio's flag flew over the Battle of San Juan del Monte (now San Juan, Manila). This was the first battle of the Philippine Revolution.
